Just as Reuben and Esau each lost the birthright to a younger brother (see 1 Chronicles 5:1–2; Hebrews 12:16–17), so Laman lost his right to be “a ruler and [a] teacher over [his] brethren” because of his rebellion against God (see 1 Nephi 3:29).
