Who was the man dressed in a white robe?

Thomas R. Valletta

Neither Lehi nor Nephi identifies the man in the white robe. Many assume it was an angel or perhaps Jesus Christ. Heavenly beings wearing white robes and standing before prophets is consistent with the experience of Joseph Smith when Moroni, who was wearing an “exceedingly white” robe (JS–H 1:32), appeared to him, and also that of Daniel, who saw in vision “a man clothed in linen” who stood before him (Daniel 10:5 [2–12]). Lehi does not give the interpretation of every symbol in his dream but rather focuses on the outcome of his family members’ choices.
