What happens to the people in Lehi’s dream?

Thomas R. Valletta

Four groups are identified in Lehi’s dream: Group 1 (1 Nephi 8:21–23) is made up of individuals who start on the path to the tree but are lost in the mist; Group 2 (1 Nephi 8:24–25, 28) is those who reach the tree (and taste the fruit) by holding onto the rod but fall away when they are mocked by the people in the great and spacious building; Group 3 (1 Nephi 8:29–30, 33) is those who continually hold fast to the iron rod, fall down, and partake of the fruit of the tree, and stay; and Group 4 (1 Nephi 8:26–27, 31–33) is those who desire the great and spacious building more than they desire the tree and its fruit.
