“And We Did Travel and Wade Through Much Affliction in the Wilderness”

W. Cleon Skousen

It must have been an impressive and ominous experience for the complaining women and the men who were planning to murder Lehi and Nephi to suddenly hear the voice of God split the silence of the heavens and commence rebuking them. It was no minor chastisement. The Lord poured down on their heads a flood of many words and it says, He "did chasten them exceedingly." Nevertheless, after they had buried Father Ishmael and obtained a new supply of food, the pointers on the Liahona shifted ninety degrees and sent them away from the Red Sea and directly into the desert. Amazingly, Nephi describes this cruel and dangerous trip across Saudi Arabia in four verses

Nephi says that during this part of the excursion they suffered much affliction. Nevertheless, their wives had children and seemed to be able to nurse their babies even though they had a diet of raw meat. In fact their women were strong like men. Among the children who are later mentioned in the text we find sons born to Lehi. One was named Jacob and another was named Joseph. He also had daughters that Nephi later mentions. We also learn that all of the married couples had children during this trek.
