“Mine Hand Hath Also Laid the Foundation of the Earth”

Denver C. Snuffer, Jr.

God is responsible for the creation. Though others were involved under His presiding authority, He alone is responsible for this creation and He sustains it. King Benjamin reminds us the original creation was only one part of God’s involvement with us and the world. Without His continuing sustaining power, this creation would return to chaos. He keeps this physical creation together by lending it His power. King Benjamin taught that:

“God who has created you, and has kept and preserved you, and has caused that ye should rejoice, and has granted that ye should live in peace one with another—…him who has created you from the beginning, and is preserving you from day to day, by lending you breath, that ye may live and move and do according to your own will, and even supporting you from one moment to another–” (Mosiah 2: 20–21.)

This assurance God is the creator and owner confirms Nephi’s teaching to his brothers of God’s continuing involvement in this world. His brothers apparently believed in a distant and uninvolved God. Nephi’s view was He was directly involved, persuadable, and caring, and if you asked Him and listened to Him, He would intervene in the events of your life. He owns this earth, and all its occupants. And He cares. This passage from Isaiah confirms this about God, and ratifies Nephi’s testimony. Nephi would like us to see Him in those terms also.
